Satoru Nakahara's "Dramatic" is more than just a photography project; it's an exploration of art, light, and interpretation. Drawing inspiration from the works of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Nakahara uses light as a spotlight, inviting viewers to imagine the stories behind the images. The photos, taken in common places like Tokyo and Nakahara's hometown, stir up curiosity and imagination, offering a fresh perspective on everyday life.
What sets "Dramatic" apart from other photography projects is its unique approach to storytelling. The photos blur the line between painting and photography, challenging viewers to question what they're seeing. This sense of curiosity and imagination is what Nakahara believes can change the way people think and appreciate art. By shifting their perspective, viewers can find the world more interesting.
The project was realized using a small digital camera, with exposure adjustments made using computer software. The photos were taken in dramatic mode and simple mode on an Olympus Camera Stylus2 Tough. The choice of black and white photography and a square frame was deliberate, chosen to maximize impact and simplicity.
"Dramatic" was a project that spanned from 2013 to 2016, with photos taken in various locations including Shinjuku and Toyosu in Tokyo, Numazu in Shizuoka, Maldives, and Hawaii. The underlying research question was: "What is light? How did Rembrandt and Vermeer capture light in their works? How can people be inspired by light in photos?"
One of the challenges Nakahara faced was how to emphasize the dramatic effect using minimal light and composition similar to Rembrandt's, while also converting the images to black and white. The photos were then adjusted for exposure to stir people's imagination and trimmed from rectangle to square to eliminate waste and balance the light and subjects.
In conclusion, Satoru Nakahara's "Dramatic" is a testament to the power of photography as a medium to reinterpret classic art and inspire new ways of thinking. The project's success, as evidenced by its Silver A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award, is a testament to Nakahara's innovative approach and technical expertise.
